Family Budget Planning

April 29th, 2008

If you are in charge of developing a family budget, chances are you’ve had the unfortunate experience of developing a brilliant budget plan that wasn’t executed well. This happens to many families and couples, but with a little attitude tweaking you can gain the help of your family in making your family budget work.

Create a family budget vision. Talk to your spouse and children about whatever budget constraints you are facing, or whatever financial goals you intend to set. By being completely honest about the bills and loans you have to pay, or your intention to save a certain amount of money for a family fund, you can help your family understand better your collective financial situation.

This will allow the whole family to change their perspective on purchases they make. It will also help you ensure that whatever personal finance budgeting you utilize won’t be counteracted by a subsequent spending spree by your teen.

What Are HD and HD Ready?

April 27th, 2008

HD ready is a label you have probably seen in various pieces of video equipment, for instance television sets or DVD players. If you are planning to purchase video equipment of any kind, you must be familiar with HD and HD ready, so you can make educated choices as a consumer.

The label HD ready refers to the ability of the product to handle high definition (HD) video. HD video is a video standard of higher resolutions than those supported by older standards. A display system must support video resolutions of 720 to 1080 vertical lines for it to be considered HD ready.

In order to view high definition video content, one must have a display unit that can handle high resolution. These include most computer screens, modern television sets and some movie projectors. Especially when purchasing a television set, one must be careful to select one that supports HD video.

There are different labels used in high definition compatible video equipment, depending on the modes the product supports. Simply HD ready means that at least the minimum resolution of 720 vertical lines is supported, while Full HD and HD 1080 both refer to the resolution of 1080 vertical lines, which is the maximum supported in the standard. HD video usually has an aspect ratio of 16:9, although 4:3 is also sometimes used.

Sometimes additional information is included. The letters p or i refer to progressive or non-progressive modes, respectively. A slash followed by a number tells the update frequency. Therefore, 720p/60 means that a piece of equipment supports resolution of 720 vertical lines of progressive video with a frequency of 60 frames per second. This is a common mode in LCD displays.

In addition to the display unit, the source must also be high definition compatible. This means that to watch HD movies, the DVD player must also be HD ready. Similarly, to enjoy the full benefits of an HD television set, the television broadcast must be in high definition format (HDTV).

For a good video system, all the parts must be able to handle high definition video. This includes not only the above mentioned disc player and display unit, but also all the connections used between them. The source media must naturally also be in a format of HD resolution. Also the mode matters, so for best possible effect every part of the home theater system should support full HD.

The New Wave of Poker Online

April 22nd, 2008

After the early days of the poker game, poker became a bit isolated from the world. Limited by law in many countries to high-rolling casinos, the poker game was out of reach for the average citizen. Therefore, beginners and novices who were interested in the game had a hard time to pursue their dream.

Why? Because they should be ready to shell out large amounts of cash money to be able to play. Moreover, the beginner should be ready to face the challenge of trying to stay expressionless even though his card has absolutely no sign of winning, or his opponent will have the opportunity to read his reaction and every movement.

Luckily, with the information era online poker came into the scene. Through the years, online poker has become so significant that the World Series of Poker accept entries from players of purely online poker background.

Today there are literally hundreds of online poker rooms to choose from. They each have their strengths and their weaknesses and most also their loyal players.

The new wave of online poker has made the game readily available to each and everyone who is interested.

The Digi-Age of Photography

April 21st, 2008

With the onset of the 21st century, photos can be manipulated and altered in many ways using digital imaging and computer aided techniques. Digital photography started a change in photographic techniques and changed the nature of photography significantly.

Nowadays, the number of photos you can take is much higher, so you can afford to make mistakes. Also, a photograph can often be remedied on the personal computer, even if it was spoiled by too much lighting. While that has made photography more beginner friendly, it is still far from an easy hobby.

If you are into photography, you probably want to get better at it. That requires practice - a lot of it. However, it is often helpful to be taught about the theory, too. That’s why online photography courses have become a popular method both for new photographers to get used to the art and for more experienced photographers to hone their skills.

Photography has been present for more than a hundred years and yet new innovations are taking place even this day. Looking at it, one has to surmise that photography will develop again in the future. It’s never too late to get into photography and even now it’s too early to stop learning more about it.

The world of online poker often undergoes changes as new sites spring up and old rooms close. Top Three Online Poker Rooms

April 15th, 2008

There are tens, if not hundreds of online poker rooms that you can choose of. Many players simply try one and stick with it, but they may lose on big opportunities. There are differences between even the major poker rooms that you should know of.

The most important things to consider when choosing an online poker room are their competition, games and of course the promotional bonuses they offer. The three poker rooms listed here are all very good, but even they have differences.

Poker Stars

Poker Stars is perhaps the best thought of poker room online. They have been in business since 2002 and are often recommended as a secure and reliable option for poker enthusiasts. The down sides are that the competition is not as easy as on some sites and that they don’t offer significant promotions for new players. However, the respectable number of players and their deposit bonuses for existing player make up well.

Titan Poker

Titan Poker is a relatively new arrival to the online market for poker rooms, having been founded in 2005. Their quality of service warrants inclusion in the top three and they also have some pretty good promotions, if you know where to look. The only real downside to Titan Poker is that the number of games is low. You will be hard pressed to find any other games than Hold’em with enough players, but that may well change as the room matures up.

Full Tilt Poker

Full Tilt is the third best poker room, and though it loses to Poker Stars and Titan Poker, it does so by a very narrow margin. Their frequent and amazing promotional bonuses definitely justify giving Full Tilt at least a go. One thing you might not like about Full Tilt is the generally tight nature of players. That does not mean you cannot make money, but most prefer meeting a loose aggressive type any day of the week.

The world of online poker often undergoes changes as new sites spring up and old rooms close. That is one of the reasons you might want to try more than just a single poker room - to have a backup, if your preferred one fails. Another good reason are the new player bonuses offered by most major poker rooms.

The three poker rooms above are all good options, if you are interested in testing some new rooms. They are all very good poker rooms, picked from among many other fine ones. If you have not yet joined them, you will most likely benefit from some form of bonuses or promotions for each of them.

The best place to go for promotions is Poker Room Reviews. The site has reviews and bonuses for the best poker rooms, including the ones above.

5 Mistakes Made by New Photographers

April 10th, 2008

With the new era of digital cameras, photography has become much more common. Almost anyone can afford a camera and most have one. Even many cell phones have a digital camera. While most new cameras are also quite easy to use, there are still many areas in photography where you need to have the knowledge to succeed.

These are some of the most common mistakes made by new digital photographers. If you are an unpracticed photographer, you should try to at least avoid these mistakes.

1. Poor Camera

This is by far the most common mistake these days. Many cheap digital models are only good for either landscape or closeup photographs due to their poor focus. Know your camera: what it can do and what are its limitations. A $200 model should never be used for professional photography.

2. Lighting

Another common mistake is to forget lighting or believe the camera takes care of it all. You will seldom get as good images in dark conditions with a cheap flash than you could in plentiful natural lighting.

3. Cropping

While it is much easier to see what gets in the photo with today’s LCD displays than with an old-fashioned seeker, there are still plenty of mistakes you can make. One thing to remember is that you can crop the image on your computer. That means you will most likely want to include too much space around than too little.

4. Zooming

There are so make things that can go wrong with zooming. The number one thing to keep in mind is to always avoid using the digital zoom. It is a feature found in many cheap digital cameras that basically has the same result as cropping the image on your computer. If you need zoom, only use the optical zoom.

5. Camera Settings

If you are not sure about the settings in your camera, it may be best to use the defaults. If there are several modes, the ‘auto’ mode is usually the easiest to use. You should take care that you use a good format to save the images. Often the high detail mode with the highest resolution should be used, if you are not short on memory.

The bottom line is: if you are serious about photography, you must practice it. Digital photography does not differ much it that sense.

If you do not learn the skills in advance, you are going to have to learn them the hard way, and that will probably mean making these mistakes and more. It can also mean tens or hundreds of lost photos - shots that could have been excellent had you not made a simple mistake.

Eldest - the Movie?

April 6th, 2008

There is still no official word about Eldest - the second book in the Inheritance Cycle - being made into a movie. Before Eragon was released as a movie, it was said that it would be decided at least in part based on the success of the first movie.

The movie was unfortunately not a great hit and didn’t make as much as it should have, so the plans for the Eldest movie were postponed. There is still no official word.

So, how will it be: will Eldest the movie be made?

What Are the So Called “Hard Money” Loans?

April 1st, 2008

Hard money loans are a type of property based loans similar to bridging loans. They are usually tied to real estate and have a much higher interest rate than traditional commercial property loans. They are often used by businesses in distressed financial situations: eg. as bankruptcy or foreclosure is imminent.

When Should You Take a Hard Money Loan?

Hard money loans are usually only a viable choice when the alternative is to quick sell property. The cause can be a distressed general financial situation. Even though the interest rates for hard money loans can be almost double what a commercial property loan usually has, selling property quickly below real value would be an even worse choice.
